The gun I carry

by JT
(Sheridan,Wy,USA)

I was reading the article about the best handguns to carry and noticed that the Ruger SP101 ( in .357 mag ) was 2nd choice. I also carry a Ruger SP101 but it's chambered for the 32 H&R mag. It has about the same power as a 38+P and the recoil isn't bad so I can line up for a second shot quick. This is only my personal opinion but I believe it's all the gun I need to protect myself.

I was mugged in Massachusetts in 1990 and the guy who took my wallet also busted my spleen. He came from behind me and kicked me in the side with boots on and when I bent over from the pain he lifted my wallet. Thank God he didn't try to finish me off. The guy who did this got a $400.00 fine and 1 year probation. I had to have my spleen removed and had to have 2 other surgeries on my stomach as a result of loosing my spleen.

I've had a license to carry since I was 21 years old but never really carried everywhere I went. After this attack I carry everywhere I go and I don't go places ( cities, towns, states ) where I'm not allowed to carry to protect myself.

Thanks to the guy who mugged me I can no longer enjoy myself when I'm in public. I'm always looking over my shoulder and when my wife and I go out to eat I have to find a place where I can sit down and watch the front door. I can't sit with my back to a door anymore and will leave a restaurant if I can't find a good place to sit with a clean view of the door. I also sleep with a loaded 12 gauge shotgun(a remington 870 loaded with buckshot).

I hope I never have to shoot another human being. I think that would be awful. But I don't want myself or my wife attacked ever again. A gun is simply something I would rather have and not need, then to need and not have.

I am disabled with a spine and joint disease and walk with the help of a cane. I choose to carry my gun in a fanny pack with an emergency rip cord that allows fast access to my gun. This way I can also carry my wallet out in front of me and I have space in the fanny pack for my medication, keys, small flash light and a couple other items.

The picture above is my gun and fanny pack.

May God be with you and Bless you all.

Changed Caliber
by: JT

Hi Guys,
In my post I said that I carry a Ruger SP101 in a 32 H&R mag. I really loved the 32H&R mag because it had about as much power as a 38+P and the recoil wasn't bad at all.
However, I have noticed that 32 H&R ammo is getting harder to find. ( at least where I live ). So I sold my Ruger SP101 stainless 32 mag and I purchased a Ruger SP101 stainless 375 mag. Same gun, different caliber. The Ruger SP101 in my opinion is one of the best concealed carry weapons on the market today, I think they're great !!

RE: JPM1084's post
by: Anonymous

Thank you for the kind words JPM1084,
Being mugged and loosing my spleen has had a real negitive effect on me. I can't bring myself to go anywhere without a gun. I carry it everywhere I go because I just don't feel safe anymore, I even carry it to church. I find myself looking over my shoulder a lot, I stopped going to events with large crowds ( ie. concerts, motorcycle rallies ect ) because I feel I can't watch everyone close enough to know what they're up to. I went to a rest area a couple weeks ago to help a friend hand out free ice water to bikers going to and coming from Sturgis and I felt very nervous being around that many people I didn't know, but I did have my 32 in my vest pocket at all times and it made me feel a little safer.
Add all that to the fact that we seem to live in a society where these young thugs seem to enjoy killing for the fun of it, It seems these young thugs don't have any respect or value for human life nor care about the thousands of families they distroy every year. I feel this country has lost it's grip on controlling crime. The A.C.L.U and Lawyers tie the law enforcements hands to a point they can barely do their job anymore without a law suit being filed and these defence lawyers find a way to get these thugs back out on the streets fast.
If I had it my way every American would carry a gun, at least then the playing field would be even. America has become way to soft on crime and way to friendly with the criminals.

I love the SP-101
by: JPM1084

JT, I am sorry that you had to go through the mugging incident. It is even more ridiculous that such a joke of a sentence was handed down. The bottom line is that law abiding, god fearing people need to stand up and demand sentencing to fit the crime. I know because I'm in Officer in a moderate sized urban dump. I carry the SP-101 2.25 inch .357 and my father has the same in .38 special. We love them and they are not only great for CC but for fun as well. I'll bet your .32 is a keeper. God bless and stay safe. Wish I could've been there for you in 1990 to catch the scum and put him in the hospital first.

Buckshot Over-penetration
by: Guntotting Homeowner

I appreciate your gun choice for home defense. My wife and I each have a Remington 870 12-g. However, we have a local shooting instructor that deals with home defense issues, and he recommends that you use a size 6 shot instead of 00. The 00 can penetrate two interior walls and kill unintended targets in other rooms (like a spouse, children, or guests). The size 6 is less likely to penetrate an interior wall, but at indoor ranges (8-15) feet, the spread pattern from my 18" barrel is results in a ragged hole about 4 inches across. In addition, at close ranges, the ER or coroner will probably find the wadding in the wound. If you are unsure, build a couple of wall blanks and put some solid targets (melons, clay blocks, water hugs, etc) behind one or more walls and test for over-penetration.
