Inside the pants holster
by: paboy

I found that that "Uncle Mikes" number 12 is just the right size for "in the pants" holster. It also has material inside the top, above the slide, so it does not add too much or your DNA to your pistol grip.

Mag problem
by: Anonymous

I too have the mag problem where one mag won't lock in but the other does. I see no physical difference between the two but I haven't taken a micrometer to them.

Quality Control follow-up
by: techfan

Having complained about my 709's build quality and the 'case of the magazine dropsy', I owe it to Taurus to say that they immediately replaced the two 'bad' mags, which work pretty much as designed. I did figure out part of the essential problem, however.

When the slide comes forward on a loaded mag, there is a slight bit of interference with the upper right portion of the top cartridge. With the bad mags, it was enough to pivot the mag away from the release catch with a resulting mag drop. The good ones have enough hold to stay in place, but an FTE is enough cause a release due to the natural finger pressure on the mag base. Since dropping a mag in an FTE is SOP, no problem.

Now that the gremlins are gone, the 709 is delight; I did however take the down time to do all the deburring the Brazilians neglected.

PT-709 Holster
by: Anonymous

Uncle Mikes is a manufacturer that sells a holstr that fits the PT-709 perfectly. Its a cloth holster that has a rubberband on the outside making it easy to carry inside your belt in any position.and it fits the gun well and still allows you to draw easily without it hanging in yhe holster.

709 Quality Control
by: techfan

After some research, I added a 709 to my 9mm arsenal of a Glock 26 and Beretta 92FS. Each has a different design philosophy and each has a separate role in my shooting and PD theory.

The first 709 had FTEs and FTFs right out of the box, even with the great S&B 115gr (my absolute favorite). The shop/range owner tried his best but I realized the the primer indent was way off center leaving the extractor searching in vain for a rim to grab. Back to Taurus it went after 3 days of ownership. A gentle letter to Taurus and a whole new gun appeared in 14 days. Problem solved and I began to learn the gun's idiosyncracies (and it mine!). Suddenly we have a new problem after a few hundred rounds - the magazine 'unhitches' with the slightest finger pressure.

I have three mags; one works great and the other two fall out. There is no apparent difference among the mags, at least visually. Now it really gets weird. In the course of trying to solve the puzzle, the bad mags will fall out when loaded but not when empty; no matter what the empties require the use of the release. When loaded and with the slide off the gun, they require the release. Obviously, an empty mag or a semi-auto without a slide are not terribly useful.

All three are much looser in the grip than I am used to so I 'shimmed' the left side of the bad mags with about .020" of paper and - lo - we're back in business. The empty/loaded puzzle has no reasonable answer and the slide offall/on is equally illogical since there's nothing that interferes. Two new magazines were order before this problem showed up and I'll wait to see how they do before I ship this gun off. However I'm visiting a friend at his machine shop tomorrow, because I want to do some real measuring, including whether the two bad one are really as true as the third one.

I have to say that while this is an excellent concealled carry weapon design - even with the pinkie hanging below the grip, I am not impressed with the execution of the design. The upper front corners of the slide should have been rounded off, the adjustable rear sight is cheesy (and not fully elevation adjustable) and the workmanship - particularly on the slide - is frankly crummy. The bottom rear corners are very sharp and I actually had to deburr the outer part of the left one. The notch for the slide catch looks like it was made with a band saw. The loose mags I think are symptomatic of the overall poor execution.

I was comparing the barrels of the Glock and Taurus and the difference in build quality was really shocking - the band saw cut/un-deburred slots in the bottom of the Taurus barrel were crude.

Has anyone else had the dropping magazine woes?

own one shoots everything
by: maxx

taurus mfg, IF i recall recommends
under 124 gr. 1220-1225 FPS 380lbs aprox
against +P,
that beig said:

i have cycled 300+ rounds now through 709ss,
no FTF, or FTE. 115gr,124gr, AND 147gr.

i have fired 115GR S&B JHP, with out any negaatives. 12237FPS - 393 LBS

the only ngative and my own objective OBSERVATION i have is the CONSIDERABLE higher power ammo, as i shot sellier & belliot 115 FMJ which has high FPS 1280 with 421 LBS which is not marked as a +p.

PERFECT CONCEAL CARRY WEAPON
by: JOSEPH HACKER

To many people, worry about the grip, or the no +p, but the real concern, is the size, the power, the difference between, reliability, and failure. It is the perfect gun, to carry, and so accurate. try it to become a believer.

709
by: JMonty

the mag extension should be out now . I as well dont like my thumb hanging freely of the grip . I def would not shoot +p through the 709 as this gun is not rated for +p . Has anyone found a good inside the waist holster or just a good holster period for this pocket rocket?

Extend magazine coming in jan 10
by: Anonymous

Wife just bought this pistol and loves it, we are both in the process of getting our CPL's. In wearing around the house I prefer the 709 over my Glock 19. Good thing she knows how to shoot the 19 and is comfortable with it cause when I go away for a weekend, I will probably ask her if I can bring the 709 because of the feel when carrying. She called Taurus and they said a extended mag will becoming out in January of 2010, to help with the grip. Just got a Talon grip for my 19 and seems to feel great, have not shot it yet with the grip, going to see what I can find for her Taurus.

Grips for 709 slim
by: Tony

I was about to buy this weapon, but had to hold off
because the stock grips.
I have small hands, but I still like a firm grip on my guns
and the grip of the 709 was way to small for my comfort.
Does anyone know if there are aftermarket grips available?
