The continuing Saga of Flight 709
by: Kirk

I've flapped my gums - ok, beaten the keyboard - about my 709 and its problems but now I've finally had it.

After initial purchase, FTEs were a serious problem; the bolt was bad, the firing pin was striking off the side and the extractor had little to grab. Taurus replaced the gun and the new one dropped magazines; I found a new use for the dangling right pinky and kept it pressed up against the bottom. Added 'shims' to the left of the magazines and reasonable pressure was then on the mag release to the right.

Found that the gun was positively finicky about ammo, and tried to accomodate it. This past weekend at the range was a joke; there was an FTE/Jam/stovepipe virtually every third or fourth round. Various ammo was tried to no good effect. Meanwhile my Glock 26 and my Beretta 92FS were utterly infallible with any ammo, from Blazer Brass, S&B 115 and 124, Winchester NATO, Fiocchi.

The 709 Slim really is easy to carry concealed in a pocket, is easy to shoot well out to 15yd and really isn't a bad design. The build quality is poor and the reliabilty is terrible. Realizing that such a design is meant to be carried in hopes that it will never be used, but in determination that if needed it will function, I refuse to trust my life to it.

I will clean it up, and plan to trade it ASAP. The new Ruger LC9 should be available in a few weeks and may well be my choice. For now, my trusty Walther PPK/S 32acp (inherited from my Dad) will be my companion, heavy though it is. I've found 32 ammo that gives me confidence and the gun, like the Glock and Beretta, never fails. Sadly, the 32 and 380 mouse guns are just too tiny for my taste, but I may change my mind; guess I'm a 9mm true believer.

My Continuing 709 Saga - Better Now
by: techfan

Herewith my continuing 709 saga:

I've more or less fixed my ejecting magazines by two parallel 1/64" thick brass rails on the left of each mag one just below the mag notch and the other 1/4" above the base. These are mounted with doublestick tape and have also been lightly filed with fine diamond grit to where no scratching from the internal ribs occurs. Works great and ejects nicely, but only when I want to. No more pinky under the mag.

I use and compare a lot of 9mm ammo, preferring the S&B 115 and Fiocchi 115. Speer GD 124 is in my dedicated PD mag, and S&B 124 (465 ft/lb) works well. Everything of lesser quality feeds and shoots ok, but repeated tests show the above to ammo to be far and away the most consistent, with rearg to accuracy and tight groups. Oddly, the Winchester 124 NATO (also 465 ft/lb)simply will not work in this gun. Since every other 9mm I own (2 Berettas, 1 Glock) will will eat whatever it's fed, something about this gun/ammo combination causes the 709 indigestion; accoringly the NATO round is off its menu.

I look forward to a Pierce mag end, if it appears, and will forego my earlier decision to give this gun to someone I don't like now that the teething problems are cured. The new Ruger subcompact just announced has piqued my curiosity but for now I'm content with the 709 as the best value for safe concealed carry.

good holster for 709
by: Caddymech

kholster is the 3rd one I have tried, and I must say it is the best! very comfortable, inner waistband leather paddle type, very adjustable, I even used a heat gun to modify the hard plastic part to accept the add-on crimson trace laser. Both work excellent.

Pt709 and +p ammo
by: USMarineCorps

Well let's squash the rumors.... According to the Taurus 2010 catalog, all Taurus handguns are rated for +P ammunition with the exception of magnesium revolvers. If you don't believe me follow the link below and read it for yourself.

http://www.taurususa.com/2010catalog/?catalog_page=2

I've put 50 rounds through it to get use to it for my CHL class, and I did have one FTE on the third shot or fourth shot, but that was because I didn't get all the packing grease off. After I cleaned it really quick, it shot flawlessly. It shot a little to the left, and a tad low. I made the adjustments on the rear sight, and now it's perfect. I put 50 more rounds through it during my certification class, and left the mod body target with a gaping hole dead center. I had about 4 or 5 shots about a half inch away from the gaping hole, and one shot dead center on the head, but that was intentional. I alredy qualified and aimed at the head for my last shot.

I carry just about every where. No holster, in my pocket, safety engaged, 7 in the magazine, 1 in the chamber. Trust your gun. I've been around guns a long time, and I even ran it through my own impact tests to ensure to accidental discharge. This weapon passes. I wouldn't recommend for just anyone to carry the way I do, I'm always aware, and out of habit I never curl my index finger when reaching for my gun to place on the counter, or nightstand. I feel for the butt of the weapon with straight fingers, and remove the weapon with the same care.

Inside the pants holster
by: paboy

I found that that "Uncle Mikes" number 12 is just the right size for "in the pants" holster. It also has material inside the top, above the slide, so it does not add too much or your DNA to your pistol grip.

Quality Control follow-up
by: techfan

Having complained about my 709's build quality and the 'case of the magazine dropsy', I owe it to Taurus to say that they immediately replaced the two 'bad' mags, which work pretty much as designed. I did figure out part of the essential problem, however.

When the slide comes forward on a loaded mag, there is a slight bit of interference with the upper right portion of the top cartridge. With the bad mags, it was enough to pivot the mag away from the release catch with a resulting mag drop. The good ones have enough hold to stay in place, but an FTE is enough cause a release due to the natural finger pressure on the mag base. Since dropping a mag in an FTE is SOP, no problem.

Now that the gremlins are gone, the 709 is delight; I did however take the down time to do all the deburring the Brazilians neglected.

PT-709 Holster
by: Anonymous

Uncle Mikes is a manufacturer that sells a holstr that fits the PT-709 perfectly. Its a cloth holster that has a rubberband on the outside making it easy to carry inside your belt in any position.and it fits the gun well and still allows you to draw easily without it hanging in yhe holster.

709 Quality Control
by: techfan

After some research, I added a 709 to my 9mm arsenal of a Glock 26 and Beretta 92FS. Each has a different design philosophy and each has a separate role in my shooting and PD theory.

The first 709 had FTEs and FTFs right out of the box, even with the great S&B 115gr (my absolute favorite). The shop/range owner tried his best but I realized the the primer indent was way off center leaving the extractor searching in vain for a rim to grab. Back to Taurus it went after 3 days of ownership. A gentle letter to Taurus and a whole new gun appeared in 14 days. Problem solved and I began to learn the gun's idiosyncracies (and it mine!). Suddenly we have a new problem after a few hundred rounds - the magazine 'unhitches' with the slightest finger pressure.

I have three mags; one works great and the other two fall out. There is no apparent difference among the mags, at least visually. Now it really gets weird. In the course of trying to solve the puzzle, the bad mags will fall out when loaded but not when empty; no matter what the empties require the use of the release. When loaded and with the slide off the gun, they require the release. Obviously, an empty mag or a semi-auto without a slide are not terribly useful.

All three are much looser in the grip than I am used to so I 'shimmed' the left side of the bad mags with about .020" of paper and - lo - we're back in business. The empty/loaded puzzle has no reasonable answer and the slide offall/on is equally illogical since there's nothing that interferes. Two new magazines were order before this problem showed up and I'll wait to see how they do before I ship this gun off. However I'm visiting a friend at his machine shop tomorrow, because I want to do some real measuring, including whether the two bad one are really as true as the third one.

I have to say that while this is an excellent concealled carry weapon design - even with the pinkie hanging below the grip, I am not impressed with the execution of the design. The upper front corners of the slide should have been rounded off, the adjustable rear sight is cheesy (and not fully elevation adjustable) and the workmanship - particularly on the slide - is frankly crummy. The bottom rear corners are very sharp and I actually had to deburr the outer part of the left one. The notch for the slide catch looks like it was made with a band saw. The loose mags I think are symptomatic of the overall poor execution.

I was comparing the barrels of the Glock and Taurus and the difference in build quality was really shocking - the band saw cut/un-deburred slots in the bottom of the Taurus barrel were crude.

Has anyone else had the dropping magazine woes?

own one shoots everything

taurus mfg, IF i recall recommends
under 124 gr. 1220-1225 FPS 380lbs aprox
against +P,
that beig said:

i have cycled 300+ rounds now through 709ss,
no FTF, or FTE. 115gr,124gr, AND 147gr.

i have fired 115GR S&B JHP, with out any negaatives. 12237FPS - 393 LBS

the only ngative and my own objective OBSERVATION i have is the CONSIDERABLE higher power ammo, as i shot sellier & belliot 115 FMJ which has high FPS 1280 with 421 LBS which is not marked as a +p.

PERFECT CONCEAL CARRY WEAPON

To many people, worry about the grip, or the no +p, but the real concern, is the size, the power, the difference between, reliability, and failure. It is the perfect gun, to carry, and so accurate. try it to become a believer.

Extend magazine coming in jan 10
by: Anonymous

Wife just bought this pistol and loves it, we are both in the process of getting our CPL's. In wearing around the house I prefer the 709 over my Glock 19. Good thing she knows how to shoot the 19 and is comfortable with it cause when I go away for a weekend, I will probably ask her if I can bring the 709 because of the feel when carrying. She called Taurus and they said a extended mag will becoming out in January of 2010, to help with the grip. Just got a Talon grip for my 19 and seems to feel great, have not shot it yet with the grip, going to see what I can find for her Taurus.

Grips for 709 slim
by: Tony

I was about to buy this weapon, but had to hold off
because the stock grips.
I have small hands, but I still like a firm grip on my guns
and the grip of the 709 was way to small for my comfort.
Does anyone know if there are aftermarket grips available?
