My favorites

by Pablo Birriel
(Newport News Va)

I can't even tell you how many firearms I have owned. My father was in the military and I have always been around guns. I have owned everything from a cheap Raven .25 automatic to a Sig M2 in .45 ACP. My favorites are a CZ82 in 9x18 and a S&W Sigma in .40. I know many will groan but I can explain.

The Sigma has been bad mouthed by almost anybody you can imagine and in the early years they were pretty valid gripes. However the last batch pretty much got it right. With some modifications from the lessons learned we got the M&P.

I never cared for the Glock. I didn't like the way it felt in my hand. I had also seen several failures with their safety trigger and an ammo dump to the ground courtesy of the polymer magazine. I also didn't care for the fact that the rounds weren't fully supported. I did feel that the design itself was a good one and that is what attracted me to the Sigma. The Sigma is pretty much a modified Glock design, so much so that they pay a royalty fee to Glock for copyright infringement. However, the grip is better, it has steel magazines and the rounds are fully supported.

The only knock on the gun has been its trigger pull, which resembles a Glock with the NY trigger. There is a simple modification that can be done to lighten up the trigger and it makes it a winner for me. It is accurate, simple, reliable and cheap. All of the things I like. I have never had a FTF or FTE with the pistol.

My other favorite is my CZ82. I love this gun. I have owned many guns in the 9MM Makarov caliber and have found them inherently accurate. This one is no exception. It carries thirteen rounds plus one more. It has an octagon rifled barrel which gives a little more zip to the round and it can really put them where you want them to go. It is not the lightest gun you can carry but its weight allows the snappy Mak round to purr. It has an excellent trigger and very good sites. On a good day, I can put those rounds inside of a quarter at combat distances and on a regular day a fifty cent piece.

The only problem I have is that ammo manufactures have mistaken this round for a chubby .380. I believe that a 100 grain FTX Hornady round at 1100 fps would be nothing to sneeze at. I recently spoke to a Hornady rep and they stated that there will be a release of this excellent caliber in their critical defense line but I have no idea of its final configuration.

I just would like to add one thing. To all of you out there considering purchasing your first firearms, please don't allow firearm bigotry to influence your purchase. Pick your gun just as you would your mate. Go on dates with them, to the range of course and make your final decision based on what you like. If you do this you will never be disappointed.

sigma sw.40ve
by: Paul A.

A far as the trigger goes it is gritty and about 10 lbs. from S&W but the heavy pull is designed that way. I did a complete trigger job on it by polishing all the contact points that need attention. The sear in particular has a slot in it that is what needs specific attention as that is where most all of my gritty feel came from. After this mod this pistol is the deal of the century. With the stock firing pin spring it will pull at 7 lbs. with the wolff reduced firing pin spring it will pull down to 5.5lbs. and smooth as slik. If you do not know what you are doing DO NOT attempt to do this mod, bring it to any good gunsmith and they can take care of it for you.

Sigma Trigger
by: Pablo

If you go to you tube there is a simple video on how to lighten the trigger pull, type in Sigma trigger. The entire action duplicates the Glock except it has one additional spring, which is easy to remove. Once you remove that spring the trigger pull is considerably easier. I initially found the information on the S&W forum but the video is better. As for some of the other guys having a problem with their Sigma's, I don't know. It may have been a quality control issue. I brought mine because I couldn't pass up a deal like the one I got. I figured that if it turned out to suck then I could always use it as an improvised hammer. Funny thing though, it's just like a Timex watch. It just takes a licking and keeps on ticking.

CZ82 & 83
by: Dave Weaver

The Cz82/83 is one of my all time favorites. Fits the hand perfectly and very accurate in either 9x18 Makarov (CZ82) or .380 (CZ83). Superb reliability and just flat fun to shoot. Perhaps a little heavy & large for a .380 but a great pistol.

Old News
by: Mark

While I ring steel with re-loaded .38s through 1873 Single Action Army clones for practice because firing at different angles and distances while trying to follow a prescribed course of fire under the pressure of a timer operator and three spotters challenges my capacity more than punching paper by myself, what I always revert to when it's not just a game is my .45acp Colt 1911. It was my side arm during more than a dozen years active duty military service and I am much more comfortable and familiar with it than any other design. The cartridge does the work; the choice of launcher is secondary, but needs to be one which suits the operator. I have so much history with the old war horse she's like a prosthesis. The only way I have found to carry it is a Wilderness Safepacker, but everything in life is a trade-off at some level.

Beretta 96
by: Tim

I carry the Beretta 96 as a concealed carry weapon. I know the complaining already Big, Heavy, and hard to conceal. Lets just say being a combat Veteran I love the Beretta. I just never loved the 9mm round. The 96 has all the same specs only its in .40 cal. The best carry gun is teh one you personally feel most confident with. Teh one that will work each and evey time. because when you need it is when it counts. Beretta 96 with a 165 gr JHP gets my vote.

Sigma 9mm
by: paul

Just got my New S&W sigma 9mm on 12-31-09 I have put 150 to 200 rounds thought it. It jams every round FTE have tried 4 diffrent types of rounds 115gr 120gr even 160gr FMJ still the same. I own 2 other S&W pistols and about 5 other hand guns from a Helwan 9mm to a Taurus pt 24/7 pro .40. I must say S&W has let me down going to take it back to gun store monday. If they fix it i don't know if i can trust this gun with my life. I hope S&W will make it good. I must say in 30 years of owning handguns this is the worst one i have every seen!

Plus 1 For Sigma
by: Anonymous

I've put more than 1500 rounds through my Sigma 9mm over the past 18 months and have only had 2 or 3 failures and those I think were due to a dirty magazine. Right from the start, I cleaned mine every 100 to 120 rounds.

The trigger has never been an issue for me. After a few hundred rounds, it loosens up and I just learned how to shoot it. I actually think the heavier trigger has helped me shoot other guns with lighter triggers better.

SW9VE
by: Daniel W.

I own 2 Smith&Wesson SW9VE's, I had a lot of jams and failure to eject problems with both of them no matter what type of ammo, I polished the feed ramps and it didn't help, but I didn't give up on them. I always cleaned and lubed them according to the book. Finally I lubed them the way I though they should be, and haven't had another problem.I also no longer leave the clips loaded because the clip springs seem a little weak.
The only thing about the extra lube is, they have to be cleaned more often, I normally clean all my guns after every 100 rounds anyway.
My carry gun is a un-modified Colt M1991A1 Stainless .45, My backup is a IJ70-17AH Makarov .380
But most of all, my Lord and Saviour is Jesus Christ.

Sigma trigger
by: Anonymous

I have had a Sigma for a year in 9mm and have thousands of rounds through it with NO problems. I love mine and have definately gotten my money's worth out of it. What did you do to thr trigger? The trigger is a bear, no way around it and I would like to hear what you did to fix that.
