Glock Springs
by: Mr. Dolittle

The Glock Gen 4 is an example of putting a product into production before you complete a full field test. I understand from a Glock Armour that they used a 40 S&W recoil spring in the 9mm's trying to use the same spring for all the modles - did not work as they planed.

Brand new Glock17 Gen4 -- jam city. Seemed to jam less while holding it like a rock, but who can do that in a crisis? My G26 is a dream. Will call Glock tomorrow to fix spring problem...very disappointed and am thinking of trading it in.

Glock 22 Gen 4
by: Shonuff

I bought a Glock 22 Gen 4 this week and immediately went to the range to test it out. I put 75 rounds through the gun with 2 differant types of ammo. The gun worked perfectly. The slide does not feel unusually tight to me. The one challenge for me has been getting the the spring assembly to seat fully in-place. The spring assembly is very tight when it comes to putting it back into the gun once you take it apart. I can see how some people think that they have seated the spring when they really have not fully done so. I am sure it will loosen up a bit as the gun is broken in. Great feeling and shooting gun!

New Recoil Spring
by: Mr. Dolittle

The new recoil spring solved the problem, my Glock 17 Gen 4 functions perfectly now. To bad Glock had this issue, I'm somewhat amazed that you have to search the web to find out the issue then call them up. Seems they should have contacted everyone who purcahsed this gun and advised them of it.

New 17 Gen 4, jamming deluxe
by: In Detroit area

Wow, other people who have jamming. Here's my story.

Just got my Gen 4 G17 today. Immediately after purchase went over to store's range and had a jam (Federal American Eagle) with first round. Went through 2 boxes. Jamming so bad (every round about 3/4 into second box) that I called shop manager to investigate. He fired 10 rounds of Speer Lawman 9mm 115 Grain Full with no problem, and gave me a box to try. Worked well. Then went back to Federal American Eagle and jam city.

My G26 on other hand has been flawless.

Will call Glock Monday.

Jamming
by: Anonymous

Too bad about the Gen4 problems. My G19 Gen 3 had jam issues with HPs for years. I thought I could find the right ammo so that is why it took so long to fix. I then carried FMJs as I had no choice. The problem was that I used my 15 and 17 rnd mags for the range and shot FMJ. It turns out that the 10 rnd had the problem. Once I started shooting all mags and all round types I noticed the problem was only in the 10 rnd mags and only with HPs. Once I had this narrowed down a short google research and call to Glock and they shipped new followers for the mags. That fixed the problem. I was even able to create the jam with rapid ejection without even shooting it.

To troubleshoot such a problem, rotate all mags as well as ammo and keep notes.

I think that I'll wait a year to get my new Gen 4. Hopefully you guys will have the bugs out by then.

New Glock Spring
by: Mr. Dolittle

Spoke to Glocks Customer Service this morning and described the issue. There is now a "second generation" new recoil spring for the 17, it P/N 02-1. According to Glock it will solve the problem of FTE and FTF plus not properly fitting the cutout in the muzzle of the slide. It is in the mail to me today. Will post once I have a chance to shoot, holding final judgement on the pistol until I go to the range.

Glock 17 4th Gen
by: Mr. Dolittle

I purchased a new Glock 17 4th Generation for Christmas. I shot it for the first time yesterday and all I got right out of the box was jams and stove pipes and the slide failed to stay open after the last shot on both factory magazines, was using 9mm Winchester. The range office fired it and it functioned for him, but I was still getting jams (the product will always work right when displayed to the repairman), he told me I was not holding the gun "tight enough" (have been shooting for 30 years). I bought the Glock because of it's reputation, but I'm inclined to think the Glock is a a piece of plastic junk or I just got stuck with a lemon. I don't have this problem with my XD Springfield or 1911A1 45 ACP. I've read here that there is an issue with the recoil springs so I have a call into Glock to discuss it. I'm less than pleased with this purchase and am inclined to get ride of the gun.

Went to the Glock factory
by: Judge

Take this for a non-scientific smaple size or just a vignet...here it comes.

Bought brand new Glock 17 Gen4 for my wife on Oct 13, 2010. The dealer had hear rumors of jamming but we liked the Gen4's feel and liked that it was different than my G17 Gen3.

We went straight to the shooting range shooting 3 brands of target ammo. You guessed it, they all jammed, probably at a rate of 1 out of 30 rounds. Brought the Autrey's Armory shooting instructor out. He fired the pistol, same results. Everybody was shocked to see a Glock jam.

Early the next week we drove to Glock USA headquarters in Smyrna, GA (handy having them 30 min. away). They were very courteous. A Glock rep took the gun and fired appx. 100 rounds. We were not allowed in the range but they reported no jamming. Regardless, they replaced the blocking mechanism and installed a recoil spring that 'isn't on the market yet.' Problem right there if they claim the G17 doesn't jam but they engineered a new spring...

Back to the range...still jamming with the new spring, blocking mechanism, and factory service. So it's back to the factory we go. Here's what we take from it all. The G17 Gen4 jams, if it didn't Glock wouldn't have come up with a new recoil spring. Also, Glock is Glock and they will fix the problem. My wife loves the feel and wouln't trade it for the world. Just needs to be tweeked.

wood-dawg -

Not intended to be argumentative here just an FYI.

As stated earlier, later model Gen-4 G17's come with a different recoil spring than the one many of us here purchased as we have the earlier production model.

Additionally, the 22 is a 40 caliber not a 9mm. While the firearms are essentially the same, only the 17 has had the malfunctioning problem according to the factory. Although other forums say the 22 has the same problem.

This information came directly from a tech at Glock when I called so you are arguing with the factory if you have a dissenting opinion.

I would like to know your source for your statistical quote regarding the 75% of malfunctions being attributed to lack of cleaning and lubricant. While cleaning a firearm is without argument essential to it's proper function, anyone who has acquired any degree of Glock experience knows that less lubricant works better. That will be important for you to know if you are accustomed to Sigs because while they are a nice firearm, they require a lot more routine maintenance than a Glock.

A Glock can easily shoot several thousand rounds with very minimal (if any) jamming in between cleaning (probably more). Not that I recommend that maintenance interval.

14 years ago I bought my first Glock 17 and a Sig P226 on the very same day after I got my concealed weapons permit. The Sig is a nice firearm. I did not have a love affair with the Glock. Today, the G17 is my favorite.

As with anything mechanical you can have intrinsic differences from one production run to the next. I still find the Sig to be the more accurate pistol. Just not as cool to me and weighs too much to lug around compared to the Glock (my opinion)

Thanks for the pointer on checking the recoil spring alignment. It requires close attention to insure it is seated properly. I think mine was misaligned from the factory the day I got my Glock.

In conclusion, any Glock can be shot straight out of the box now. They are factory prepped and lubricated to do so. It didn't used to be this way. That information also came from directly from Glock and shooting it straight out of the box the first time is actually better for it because they us a special molly type lubricant that microscopically coats the metal parts.

You couldn't possibly know how well or how poorly we all can read a manual or shoot a firearm, but I have to be honest with you: a modern battery operated squirt gun can be kinda fun to shoot too! :o)

great pistol
by: wood-dawg

i just purchase the new glock 22 gen4 and indeed it great, the new texture and the new ambi magazine release is what drew me to the gun being that i am a lefty. to be honest i almost did not buy the gun for all the negative comments on the new gen4 over the new recoil spring etc. saying it harder to pull the slide back etc. and i do own several sigs with no issue.
first of all with any gun you have to clean a lubricate it for 75% of all semi malfuntions are due to lubrication, secondly put the gun together properly and the new glock as with any you must seat the recoil spring all the down into the lug, thirdly hold on to the gun when firing for any semi pistol must be stable to cycle.
the new glock gen4 is softer on the recoil and shoots point of aim and still ease of maintinance as the other models you just got some people out there who don't read manuals and have weak hands and should shoot a water pistol instead.

Truth of the Matter
by: Anonymous

Well Jesus said the truth would set you free. Of course, He was referring to the truth of Heaven.

Anyway, pertaining to the Gen4 G17 here is the truth that will set things in order and hopefully help eliminate arguments and frustration:

Spoke with a Factory Glock Tech this am. Earlier Gen4 G17's were sent with a stiffer recoil spring (same one as the 40cal). If you bought one of these, it will likely jam.

If you were fortunate enough to get a newer version with the new spring, it will not likely jam.

Glock will happily send you a new spring.(See thread below for phone number)

Although they are diplomatic in their approach, they will make it right by sending you a new spring with minimal hassle and in typical Glock fashions = Professionals above reproach so to speak.

Will it fix the issue? It has for others, and I believe it will for me.I doubt that they would be so willing to send a new spring if it didn't.

I will let you know the outcome in a few weeks.

God Bless and Take Care.

Reliability
by: Anonymous

Ranger Doc...The answer is yes and no. This is most of my philosophy on that:

The yes...
It jams about 1 out of every 75 shots but also seems to be getting better as the recoil spring "loosens". Even if a gun has fired 10,000 rounds previously without as single malfunction there is still a chance something can go wrong and it won't work when you need it. Yes, I know I am going to take a beating for saying that perhaps rightfully so. However, I practice the same way as if I were defending myself. I train with that "combat mentality" specifically in mind. Experience tells me to deal with it and be prepared for the worst. This is military philosophy otherwise the M16 would have been replaced a long time ago. It has pluses but it has minuses just like the Gen4 Glock. I can live with the minuses right now because I adore the pluses. Yes, I still believe the gun should be fixed if possible and as reliable as possible.

The no...

Part 1-
The first shot fires every time.

Part 2-
Given the extremely low probability of me ever needing to fire off an entire clip and then adding in the limited chance that I will ever even need ( I know not a good excuse, but also not intended to be one)to pull the gun in self defense. It is a priority to fix it but not enough to trade it in or not carry it all. I have been checking around to see what the fix is. There are some theories but nothing solid yet.

In closing:

I have been licensed to carry concealed for 15 years. The gun I carried most of those years was a Kel-Tec 9mm subcompact. It jammed maybe 1 out of every 300 rounds during practice. I never once gave it a second thought. I carry concealed nearly every day of the year. My gun will work when I need it to, and I will work with it.

In 15 years I have never once had to unholster my weapon. TO ME THAT MEANS MY GUN IS DOING ITS JOB! :O)

Glock 17 GEN.4 Jams Up

Purchased a Glock 17 Generation two weeks ago.First time out at the fire range with this unit it was very disappointing. It did not seem to matter what brand of ammunition that was put through it there were numerous jams and stove pipe issues, even the slide would not lock back after the last round.I returned the New Glock 17 GEN 4 to my dealer to have the issue resolved.

Gen 4 G 15 Jam
by: Anonymous

Hi Everybody...Yes, it is true. Mine has jammed up 4 or 5 times. I went through about 250 rounds. One time two rounds got stuck in her. One was part way in the barrel and the other half way out of the clip. Man...nothing would move. Totally jammed up. Finally forced the clip out. I was concerned at first, but in typical Glock style she fired right back up.

While the jams are unacceptable, I love this gun. I could never hit squat with a Glock because the darn grip was so large. Now, I can nail it with this baby. I hope they figure out a fix. In the mean time, I carry it everyday and love the way it feels and shoots.

Gen 4 malfunctions
by: RangerDoc

As a dedicated Glock owner, I was real disappointed with the new gen 4 mod 17. Every round with federal 115 gr ammo malfunctioned: FTF, stovepipes, failure to go into full battery, even failure to lock back on an empty mag. I tried another gun from my preferred dealer here in Savannah: same, same problems. On the other hand, with +P 124 gr it functioed flawlessly. I called Glock and they sent me a new double recoil spring (lighter?). I just got it today and can't wait to see how she does. I like the other new features of the gen 4 so I hope that this is the fix. If not, I'll trade for a gen 3 RTF2.

I just purchased a G17 gen 4 and took it to the range yesterday for the first time. I did not clean it I just loaded it up and shot 150 rounds of 124 grain ammo thru it pretty much non stop. All 150 rounds in less than 20 minutes. I had NO jams. Zero malfunctions. It worked perfectly. I hope I get the same result with my federal ammo which is about 10 grains lighter.

Very pleased with Glock 17 gen 4
by: Rod (Stockbridge GA)

I made some adjustments to the dual recoil spring of my Glock 17 gen 4. I put the recoil spring in a vise, compressed and then stretched the springs several times. Cleaned and gave the gun to Ed of Ed's Pawn. He took home and shot several rounds with only one stovepipe. Got my Glock back and shot 90 rounds on 3/31(3 jams). Major improvement. Put the recoil springs back in the vise and compressed and stretched a 2nd time, cleaned and shot 70 rounds on 4/2. NO JAMS. Shot 100 rounds on 4/3, 120 rounds on 4/9 and 65 rounds on 4/17. NO more JAMS. Total of 515 rounds. My Glock is now broken in. All of the jams happened early on and with either Blazer 115 FMJ or Rem UMC 115. No jams with RWS 124, Win 115 or Fed 115. I am very pleased with my purchase and with Ed taking the time to try my Glock out. Great customer service. I picked up some more Fed $9.47/box and plan to shoot a few rounds this weekend. ps: when I called Glock on 3/29 they suggested I use snap caps to fire and use American Eagle and Lawman ammo(hotter ammo). Glock also referred me to Wolf for a lighter after market springs. None available at this time. I love my Glock.

Glock Gen 4 model 17 jamming!
by: Anonymous

I just bought a Gen 4 model 17 and it is a "jam-o-matic" on all range ammo. Even after 500 rounds! The recoil spring is to heavy. Failure to extract, failure to feed, failure to lock back on last round on 4 different brands with all 3 mags. Did ok on powerball ammo (hotter stuff). I will be getting rid of it asap. I bought it to shoot USPSA. crap! Junk! Waste of money! You can't even reduce the poundage on the recoil spring cause no one sells one.

Major problems with Glock 17 gen 4
by: Rod

I purchased my first Glock 17 gen 4 yesterday(3/27/10) at Ed's Pawn(Stockbridge GA). I shot 75 rounds(4 different brands;115gr & 124gr) and the gun kept jamming, FTE etc... The Salesman told me not to clean it before using it the first time. The owners manual said to clean(field strip) before using. I got home and thoroughly cleaned. Did not remove the copper grease. About 20 of the 75 rounds jammed,FTE,FTF. I think the problem is with the dual recoil springs. Very tight. Too much spring for this gun. Hard to pull slide back as compared to a Glock 26. I will call Glock in Smyrna GA tomorrow for help. ps: the owners manual only shows a gen 3 with the single spring.
